MERCURY DIMES: Auction results didn’t bode well for some early Mercs, and Bid reductions are in place for 1917-S in MS64FB, 1920-D in MS65, as well as for 1926 and 1931-D issues in MS65FB. Two examples of 1930 PCGS MS65FB Mercs sold at auction for $374 and $207, the former with a CAC sticker while the latter had a Dominick pedigree.
WALKING LIBERTY HALVES: Just a few war-time Gem Walkers fell moderately short of maintaining their Bids from last week, namely the 1939-D, 1942-S, and 1944-S. Several early-dates are still eliciting current offers at Bid clear across the Mint State grade range.
DOLLARS: It was all about the better-date Morgan and Peace Dollars this week as a predominance of slightly lower Bids resulted from less than enthusiastic trading. 1889-CC Morgans in VG-Fine, and 1893-S Dollars in the latter grade were among the few exceptions, as these always sought-after cartwheels are again defying the odds of a segment burdened by persistent downward pressure. Among the Peace Dollars drifting lower were those tough to find D-Mint issues from 1927 and 1934, both in MS65. Unc Clad Eisenhower Dollars are needed at higher levels with at least one dealer willing to take up to a bag of each from ’71-’72, this on the heels that CAC is now stickering business strike Ikes.
PROOF SETS AND MINT SETS: Strong demand remains for 1994-1998 green Proof Sets with one dealer needing 700 of each. Bids for Silver Proof Sets are falling as Spot hangs near $31 an ounce. Mint Sets are showing two declines, the 1986 and 2010.
COMMEMORATIVES: Silver Commems are floundering again, and some issues that have always been held in high esteem by enthusiasts have plunged by almost unimaginable proportions. In the MS65 column, California issues took a 16% dive, while Missouri 2X4 and Monroe Halves each fell by 12%. Slight gains were scored by Roanoke issues in AU thru MS65. Gold issues remain stable save for 1903 Jefferson Dollars being forced back down to Bid at $875.
TYPE: Both gainers and losers shared the field for the Type market, and gainers weighed in especially well among various denominations of Flowing Hair and Draped Bust material in VF. Half Dollars of the former and Dollars of the latter variety with Large Eagle reverses in this grade are both up by 16%. Twenty Cent Pieces in MS64 and Barber Quarters in MS63-MS64 faltered just a bit along with Type II Standing Liberty Quarters in MS65FH. Proof material was far less volatile, as Liberty Seated Half Dimes with Legend and Barber Halves, both in PR63, went in opposite directions with the latter advancing up to an even $1,000.
GOLD: Most large denomination are posting modest advances to offset some of last week’s declines while many fractional issues are still bogged down by the weight of uncertainty. Complete sets of NGC $2½ Indians are being offered in AU58 for $10,000, MS61 for $13,500 and MS62 for $18,000.
